چکیده

In this study we analyze the performance of a Lagrangean relaxation upper bound for the problem of packing the maximum number of rectangles of sizes (l; w) and (w; l) into a larger rectangle (L;W ) without overlapping. This problem appears in the loading of identical boxes on pallets, namely the manufacturer’s pallet loading problem (MPL), as well as in package design and truck or rail car loading. Although apparently easy to be optimally solved, the MPL is claimed to be NP-complete and several authors have proposed heuristic methods to deal with it. The present upper bound can be useful for these methods, since it is very tight and was able to provide an optimality certificate for almost all examples analyzed. It is based on Beasley’s 0-1 integer programming formulation of the problem and it is obtained by a standard subgradient optimization procedure enhanced by problem reduction tests. We also discuss a simple Lagrangean heuristic to derive feasible solutions along the subgradient iterations. Computational results are presented for examples of the literature as well as actual examples from a Brazilian carrier.

Lagrangean relaxation with clusters and column generation for the manufacturer's pallet loading problem

We consider in this paper a new lagrangean relaxation with clusters for the Manufacturer’s Pallet Loading Problem (MPLP). The relaxation is based on the MPLP formulated as a Maximum Independent Set Problem (MISP) and represented in a conflict graph that can be partitioned in clusters. The edges inter clusters are relaxed in a lagrangean fashion. Computational tests attain the optimality for som...

A Lagrangian Decomposition Algorithm for Robust Green Transportation Location Problem

In this paper, a green transportation location problem is considered with uncertain demand parameter. Increasing robustness influences the number of trucks for sending goods and products, caused consequently, increase the air pollution. In this paper, two green approaches are introduced which demand is the main uncertain parameter in both. These approaches are addressed to provide a trade-off b...

Analysis of upper bounds for the Pallet Loading Problem

This paper is concerned with upper bounds for the well-known Pallet Loading Problem (PLP), which is the problem of packing identical boxes into a rectangular pallet so as to maximize the number of boxes ®tted. After giving a comprehensive review of the known upper bounds in the literature, we conduct a detailed analysis to determine which bounds dominate which others. The result is a ranking of...

A note on an L-approach for solving the manufacturer's pallet loading problem

An L-approach for packing (l, w)-rectangles into an (L,W )-rectangle was introduced in an earlier work by Lins, Lins and Morabito. They conjecture that the Lapproach is exact and point out its runtime requirements as the main drawback. In this note it is shown that, by simply using a different data structure, the runtime is considerably reduced in spite of larger (but affordable) memory require...
